Training for respiratory physiotherapists at BREATH

Prof. Burkhard Tümmler, scientist at BREATH, the Hanoverian location of the German Center for Lung Research, organizes the annual advanced training for respiratory physiotherapists together with the Lower Saxony respiratory physiotherapy working group.

On April 21st, 2018, a one-day advanced training course for respiratory physiotherapists took place at the Hannover Medical School (MHH) organized by the Lower Saxony working group on respiratory physiotherapy and the Disease Area 'Cystic Fibrosis' at BREATH, the Hannover site of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL). More than 40 physiotherapists from Northern Germany who have gained additional qualification in respiratory physiotherapy for the treatment of patients with CF and other obstructive pulmonary diseases attended the event. Prof. Burkhard Tümmler of the Christiane Herzog Center for Cystic Fibrosis Diseases at MHH first reported on pulmonary function diagnostics, focusing on the physical principles of whole body plethysmography, spirometry, diffusion capacity and gas leaching procedures, and the performance and interpretation of the measurements. Subsequently, Dr. Kareit from the radiology department of the MHH informed the participants on lung imaging using magnetic resonance imaging. Mr. Kareit presented new protocols, some of which have not yet been published, on how the morphology, inflammation, ventilation and perfusion of the lung can be represented with previously unknown high spatial and temporal resolution. The training ended with practical exercises on a new device generation of system spirometry. A professional spirometer for the doctor's office and a mobile patient spirometer interlock diagnosis and therapy monitoring of chronic lung diseases such as asthma or cystic fibrosis.
The next event is scheduled for spring 2019.
