European lung experts optimize experimental model systems

Scientists of the German Center for Lung Research developed recommendations for the optimization of experimental model systems in an international team of experts. In addition to the establishment of research databases, the lung experts advocate for an optimized use of animal models.

Human material for lung disease research is often limited. For this reason, animal models are often used as experimental model systems in lung research. Each model system is differently suited to explore the many different aspects of lung diseases. Critically analyzing these model systems and formulating clear recommendations for their optimized use was the central task of an international expert panel, a so-called Task Force, of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). Several scientists from the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) at the Hanover, Giessen and Borstel sites were involved in this task force.

The 25 member strong, multinational and interdisciplinary expert team from both clinic and research developed a guideline for the optimization of experimental lung disease research. This recently published guideline includes recommendations for optimizing experimental models for the study of various lung diseases. These include the DZL's disease areas COPD, acute lung injury, pneumonia, pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis.

The ERS Task Force advocates the increased establishment of research databases to make data from patient cohorts widely available. In addition, recommendations for the optimized use of animal models and their limitations are shown. The recommendations made are intended to facilitate an improved transfer of the research results into the clinical situation. At the same time, this significantly contributes to reducing the number of laboratory animals used in lung research.

The Task Force participants are confident that based on the collective experience of internationally recruited clinical and research colleagues, it has been possible to present a catalog of recommendations that will greatly assist pulmonologists in choosing suitable model systems for human lung disease research.
