Kick-Off of the DZL DataLung School: BREATH Is On Board

From April 14–16, 2025, the picturesque Schloss Rauischholzhausen hosted the official launch of the new DZL DataLung School. This innovative training program is designed for early-career researchers within the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), fostering interdisciplinary exchange and skills development at the interface of biomedical research and data-driven analysis.

Established in 2025 by the five DZL sites, the DataLung School responds to the growing demands of data-driven, personalized medicine. The program is divided into two thematic tracks: the BioTrack, aimed at participants with a biomedical background, and the CompuTrack, tailored for those with prior experience in computer science, statistics, or data science. Both tracks offer a comprehensive curriculum tailored to the needs of modern translational lung research.

Core elements include workshops on data analysis methods, machine learning, multi-omics integration, and the application of artificial intelligence in lung research. The program is further enriched by lectures from leading experts, interactive case studies, and project-based work in interdisciplinary teams. The goal is to empower participants to critically engage with complex datasets, think across disciplines, and develop innovative solutions to current challenges in lung research.

Dr. Svenja Gaedcke, Deputy Head of the BREATH Bioinformatics Platform, and Dr. Jan Fuge, Head of the BREATH Data Management and Statistics Platform, have been actively involved in shaping the content and structure of the program from the beginning. “If we want to remain competitive in international medicine and science, we must equip our next generation of researchers with the skills to meet the challenges of data-driven science. The DataLung School is a key component in achieving that goal,” emphasizes Dr. Fuge.

BREATH is well represented in the first edition of the DataLung School with a strong cohort of dedicated early-career researchers:

Participants in the BioTrack include:

Leonard Christian (Jonas Schupp’s group)
Ursula Navarro (Carola Voss’s group)
Julia Rückoldt (Lung Research group)
Mohamed Elbalkini (Theresa Graalmann’s group)
Laurien Czichon (Ruth Olmer’s group)

Representing the CompuTrack:

Christina Valtin (Jan Fuge’s group)
Ilona Rosenboom (Anna-Maria Dittrich’s group)

We wish all participants an inspiring start, exciting insights, and many fresh impulses for their scientific journeys!
