MHH once again leads in lung transplantation — helping more patients than ever before

In 2025, Hannover Medical School (MHH) once again ranks as the leading center for lung transplantation in Germany and across the entire Eurotransplant region. With a total of 110 transplants performed — including 109 isolated lung transplants and one combined heart–lung transplant — even more critically ill patients were treated in Hanover than in the previous year. This makes MHH the only center to exceed 100 lung transplants in 2025. Approximately one third of all lung transplant procedures in Germany were carried out here.

MHH also sets a strong benchmark in pediatric care. Across all Eurotransplant countries, only twelve children received lung transplants in 2025 — and every single one of these procedures was performed at MHH. The strong demand for our expertise in pediatric lung medicine is particularly encouraging and underscores Hanover’s unique role in this highly specialized field.

For BREATH and the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), this development sends an important signal: clinical excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and translational research come together here in a way that directly benefits patients.

“Especially in times of increasing staff shortages, it is anything but a given to not only maintain this level of performance but even improve it,” emphasizes Fabio Ius, Head of the Surgical Lung Transplantation Team at MHH and researcher at BREATH. “I am very proud of the entire team and grateful that we are able to give so many people a new chance at life.”

Our sincere thanks go to everyone involved: our physician colleagues, nursing staff, perfusionists, medical assistants, and administrative teams — with special appreciation for our pediatric pulmonology and pediatric cardiology colleagues. This outstanding achievement is truly a collective effort.
