Prof. Welte provides food for thought at MHH’s patient university

In their annual series of events the Patient University of Hannover Medical School addresses interested laymen who would like to learn more about certain diseases. On May 7th 2019 Prof. Dr. Welte, clinic director of pulmonology at MHH, board member of the German Center for Lung Research and director of the DZL site BREATH in Hannover, spoke about lung diseases.

The central theme of the talk was how to deal with the worldwide increase in lung disease. Due to the improved health care and the associated increased life expectancy, lung diseases, as typical diseases of old age, are on the rise. In Germany alone, more than one in ten dies of a disease of the lung, such as lung cancer or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Under the motto "A healthy lung for aging - prevention is better than cure," Prof. Welte reminded those present that they can do much for the health of their lungs themselves - in the first place quitting tobacco use. Although there has been much progress in the treatment of lung cancer and COPD in recent years, mortality remains high. Prof. Welte also went into the cost of causing lung disease. Especially in view of the increasing health expenditures due to the aging society, the total costs could be significantly reduced by reducing avoidable illnesses, like e.g. COPD, which is usually caused by tobacco smoking. As another important measure to maintain the health of the lungs for a long time, he appealed for sufficient physical activity until old age. The rousing lecture, which Prof. Welte concluded with the quote: "Getting older is nothing for cowards.", was very well received by the audience and provided plenty food for thought.

The event was accompanied by interactive hands-on and information stands. There was ample opportunity to speak with local experts, to learn about clinical trials, the currently politically discussed lung cancer screening and, for example, to perform a pulmonary function test.
