Participants at the DZL Annual Meeting selected the DataLung School poster as the winner in the Platform Biobank and Data Management category.
“I am delighted that the DataLung School has become firmly established within the DZL in such a short time and has received such broad support. This is only possible because so many colleagues actively contribute and work together to shape and implement the programme with their ideas, expertise and great commitment,” says Svenja Gaedcke, who currently heads the Bioinformatics Research Group at the DZL site BREATH on an interim basis and has been involved in the DataLung School since the programme was launched. As Co-Chair of the DataLung Steering Board, she contributes her expertise particularly in bioinformatics and data-driven research. Dr Doreen Franke supports and coordinates the DataLung School as Programme Manager.
The award recognises not only the concept behind the DataLung School, but also the dedication of those who develop the programme, shape its content and support its participants. Many early-career researchers within the DZL are themselves part of the DataLung School, while the programme also benefits from broad support from experienced scientists.

Preparing for Data-Driven Lung Research
Modern lung research generates increasingly large and complex volumes of data. High-throughput imaging, genomics and extensive patient cohorts are opening up new opportunities to investigate disease mechanisms and develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. At the same time, the need for expertise in mathematics, statistics and bioinformatics is growing.
This is where the DataLung School comes in. The joint programme of the DZL Academy and the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Tools (AIDT) working group is designed to prepare early-career researchers specifically for an increasingly data-driven research landscape.
The programme takes different academic backgrounds and levels of prior knowledge into account. The BioTrack is aimed at experimental and clinical researchers who would like to expand their skills in programming and data analysis. The CompuTrack offers researchers with a background in computer science, mathematics or statistics advanced training and a stronger focus on questions related to lung research.

The curriculum covers topics including programming, mathematics, statistics, machine learning and the fundamentals of lung research. The programme is complemented by seminars, joint events and a wide range of opportunities for networking and collaboration across DZL sites.
