The scientific program featured twelve presentations on lung infections, new therapeutic approaches, and innovative diagnostic methods, as well as 28 poster contributions from early-career researchers from both centers. Despite the full schedule, there were ample opportunities for exchange and networking. The symposium concluded with a panel discussion under the motto “From Parallel to Powerful”, which impressively highlighted both the necessity and the potential of closer cooperation. Significant overlaps were identified in the areas of infections in immunocompromised patients (e.g., intensive care patients and lung transplant recipients), chronic lung diseases, and research on respiratory viruses such as RSV, influenza, and CMV. The development of broadly effective antiviral agents and microbiome research were also highlighted as promising fields for collaboration.

For DZIF, the innovative in vitro lung infection models established at DZL, advanced imaging methods such as functional lung MRI, and well-characterized patient cohorts are of particular interest. Conversely, DZIF offers valuable pathogen-related expertise and, through the Translational Project Management Office (TPMO) of the DZIF Product Development Unit, can provide crucial support in the development of translational projects. In addition, the work of Fraunhofer ITEM on RNA-based antiviral agents and on the preclinical development of respiratory therapeutics opens further avenues for collaboration.

At the heart of the symposium was the clear commitment to continue and expand this exchange over the long term. Initial focal points could include joint support for early-career researchers, reciprocal use of research infrastructures, and cross-cutting project initiatives that leverage synergies between DZIF, DZL, and further partners such as RESIST.

The symposium thus laid an important foundation for sustainably strengthening collaboration between infection and lung research in the Hannover/Braunschweig region and beyond.
